New IRC Client Rules

Exclamation New IRC Client Rules
As many of you are aware, we've implemented some new rules related to IRC clients.

This hasn't been put in place to be a pain, I promise. Largely, this is due to abuse of this feature of the chat.

We haven't disabled IRC clients, entirely. You simply need to register your nickname, then you can use whatever IRC client you like.

What this does, is stops things like bot floods. These have plagued many rooms, and caused untold problems for many.

Along with these new rule implementations, like always, there have been a few hitches. We sincerely apologize if you've been affected by any of these. I believe we have fixed all of the known issues, now. Things should be back to normal... or at least close to.

If you do come across any more problems, please let us know. We'll get on the case, ASAP.

RE: New IRC Client Rules
Ok I am one of those persons who is let me be frank annoyed with this.

1.) I have auto join, I have auto identify on perform. But things never work fast. I am kicked for Flooding the server if I have a 4th line in perform.
2.) The Ping reply time is also too short, many people in my channel especially those on Wi-FI keep getting booted if they are inactive for over 2 minutes 120 Seconds.
3.) if there is a Nickserv GROUP and I am not allowed to change nicknames within my group what is the use of the Services.

So after all those complaints, I have a suggestion.

Why not have SSL Implemented?

This way I can have a SSL Certificate associated with my nickname / Group and I would be auto identified, I can change nicknames to the Nickserv GROUP which has my SSL Cert associated. The SSL would also help identify Spammers from their SSL Fingerprints. People wouldn't need to type in Perform / Identify every time, the regular people can use SSL certificates and be identified auto through them. Would save a lot of headache to everyone.

I am sure you already know SSL but this is what I have in mind.

RE: New IRC Client Rules
this is something which j will need to answer but for your on perform issues try using a timer for a few commands so it won't flood you out. Example: /time 1 2 /join #room1,#room2

RE: New IRC Client Rules
The flood limits have been increased, so you are able to send more commands at once. This was largely in place due to the same reasons we've initiated the new IRC rules. That said, you can also use "/join #room1,#room2,#room3" to limit the number of lines used to join multiple rooms.

As for the 120 second ping timeout, this is fairly standard. This is the amount of time after a ping is sent from the server, before your client must be respond or be declared "dead." I use a wifi connection 100% of the time, and do not have a problem with this. I would be extremely concerned if it took 2 minutes for my wifi connection to send data to my computer.

At some point, we may support nickname groups with the new IRC rules, but to be honest, this is not a feature we're likely to continue to support. We have other concepts for this.

Standard SSL support is not likely to be implemented.

Most of this is actually unrelated to the new IRC rules... but it would be good to note, the IRC connectivity is not the purpose of EWC. The Flash chat is the primary concern of EWC. Many people like to use their favorite IRC clients, so we allow this. But Flash comes first. These rules have been put in place to ensure IRC users do not abuse the service, and cause it to be less enjoyable for everyone.

RE: New IRC Client Rules
I sincerely hope that IRC will continue to be supported by EWC as many of the room owners rely on bots for added entertainment and/or securty against malicious users. I would also like to see the return of the 'mode #roomname +q chattername' command to quieten unruly chatters for a period of time... something we appear to have lost in flash. I'm sure this can be re-implemented at little cost/exertion to our hard working administrators.

RE: New IRC Client Rules
The +q mode, may be re-added in the future. For the time being, if you ban a user, but don't kick them, it does stop them from being able to send messages to the room. This makes it nearly identical to the +q mode. The only difference is, if they leave, they can't come back.

As for IRC clients, we currently have no plans for removing support. The changes we have already made have drastically limited the issues we have had to deal with related to IRC clients. This means we have more time to dedicate to new features, as less time is spent dealing with various attacks on the server.
